What is this? It is an unofficial, but I'm hoping fairly accurate, list of stores across the globe that sell second-hand fabric. It was created by and is managed by me (Radha of Sewing through Fog), who has no affiliation with any of these stores.
Why? well... buying fabric (and upcycling) is good for the planet. You've probably seen the crazy stats from the EPA, but in American alone, 11.3 million tons of textile waste (85% of everything produced) end up in a landfill every year. Thats one garbage truck full every one second! But also, there is so much great secondhand fabric out there and amazing small businesses selling it, and I want to do my part to let everyone know.
But can I make modern quilts with secondhand fabric? Absolutely. Modern quilting sometimes comes with an expectation or assumption that you have to use the newest fabric line and bright, bold colors (hi there synthetic dyes). And that's one option. But that expectation creates a world that is too expensive for many and out of touch with reality.
To me, modern quilting is a conscientious practice that reflects the diversity and beauty of our communities. Piecing together old and new, turning discarded clothes (destined for a landfill) into a treasured gift or future heirloom, that's part of quilting's history but is also the foundation of modern making.
What do you mean this guide is only "fairly accurate"? While I pride myself on my attention to detail and data spreadsheet skills, I'm sure some typos were made in the hours/days/weeks it took me to gather and validate all this info. BUT that's why I have a form on the ADD/UPDATE tab where you can let me know if there are any mistakes and I will try my best to update them in a reasonable time frame.
