Get the video tutorial here: Woven Upcycled Micro Quilt from Scraps
This was such a fun project! I had a bunch of tiny denim scraps and Liberty Tana Lawn scraps left over from working on a sample of my new quilt pattern, and I just knew they needed to be something!
I had been working on this sample of my Denim Duo quilt and when I trimmed all the blocks, I was left with a bunch of teeny tiny strips that were screaming to be used for something. Normally I save scraps for stuffing pillows, but these wanted to be something more special.
The Process
I started by stitching all the denim strips down onto a piece of muslin, and then wove in the little Liberty strips. I wasn't worried about the denim fraying because it was going to be a tight weave, and I was making a little piece of art so I knew it wouldn't get handled very much.
The Liberty Tana Lawn scraps already had some fusible interfacing on them (I needed to add some weight so they would work in the quilt), so those were good to go.
After it was woven, I stitched it down around the edges and trimmed.
Then I added batting and a chambray backing and quilted it. I used the same chambray to face the edges instead of doing a binding. It was cute but I felt like it was missing something...
Finishing Touches
I pulled out a bunch of embroidery thread and added little French knots to the top in pop colors. I don't normally do things that are this colorful, but it was just asking for these little extra details.
I called the piece: Confetti Cake
